Butterflies Unit 1 - Theory and Skills

Theory - studying the shape of wings, what makes it look so elegant, balance, positioning on the face, focal point, sponging, linework.

We provide plenty of sketches to give ideas of what decoration you can add to your butterflies, plus some pictures of completed face paints showing how they are put into practice.

Butterflies Week 2 - Live Tutorial on a Model

This week I demonstrated three butterfly designs on Aisha.  The first uses sponged base and linework.  The second uses one-strokes both as the base and edging.  The third used both methods also. These are all standard on-the-job styles, fairly easy to reproduce - although I always recommend you improve and change the designs!

1.      The first face painted put two different designs on each eye
        a)      Swirly style. DFX Bronze (green/gold) and Cameleon Plum Fairy. Both metallic.  Brush was a 9430-6 Kingart which enabled me to use very fine lines.
        b)     Simple edging. Metallic TAG Teal, Superstar Ziva and Superstar purple.  Brush was a Rosemary & Co Snowdrop no.6 similar to a Loew Cornell 795. (Kingart 7950).  Rake brush to add blending.

2.      One-stroke butterfly.  I used a sponge with DFX Evil Rose and Cameleon Evening  by Brierley (blue/green).  Brush was a Rosemary & Co angular ½” Series 310.  Edging was a one-stroke palette by Sally-Ann Lynch.

3.      Shark butterfly!  A brand new design – needs refinement.  On one side I tried it with sponging and edging with a round brush, then on the other side I used a one-stroke – black/grey/white.  I think that worked better.  The brush was a 1/2" Rosemary & co 310.
